Fountain of Youth-Liza Jane

My wife is a huge fan of Liza Minnelli.

Although this song has nothing to do with Judy Garland's daughter, I thought I would post it. Since I don't have a photo of the band, it was the perfect opportunity to post a picture of Liza May.

Whatever your feelings on Ms. Minnelli, I hope you enjoy the song.

(What do you want--I am supposed to be on vacation.)

Colgems Mystery Artist - Alex Keenan

Do you know anything about Alex Keenan?

No, I don't either. Well, at least not much. This Colgems artist evidently was Welsh, and recorded this song to extremely limited fanfare in most of the United States. However, in Hawaii, this became an enormous hit, and is still played on radio there today.

This Howard Greenfield/Neil Sedaka tune is sort of an Andy William-ish MOR song that stays with you even after one listen--and yes, Andy Williams did record this too, as did a few others artists on different labels.

But again, the mystery of Alex Keenan remains. He recorded two singles for Colgems, but that's about all I know on his recording career. Heck, I don't even have a photo to go along with this link! (One day later I've posted the Otley soundtrack, which he is on, but not with the posted song.)

Enjoy "One Day of Your Life."

Monkees Albums Rereleased

The Monkees release expanded albums
NEW YORK, July 10 (UPI) -- An expanded edition of the Monkees' first two albums is slated for an Aug. 15 release by Rhino Records.

The new version of the band's first album, "The Monkees," which spent 13 weeks as the No. 1 album on the Billboard chart, has unreleased mixes of "Papa Gene's Blues" and "The Kind of Girl I Could Love," a version of "I Don't Think You Know Me" with Micky Dolenz on vocals, a jingle for Kellogg's and a demo for "Propinquity (I've Just Begun To Care)," Billboard.com reported Monday.

Their second album, "More of the Monkees," spent 18 weeks at No. 1, some of the bonus tracks on the new expanded edition are "Look Out (Here Comes Tomorrow)" with narration by Peter Tork, the first recorded version of "Valleri," an alternate "Tear Drop City" and a mix of "I'm a Believer."

The Monkees haven't toured with all four band members since 1997 due to of inter-band hostility, Billboard.com said.

Personally, I would hope for all of their albums to be rereleased (especially through "Head"). Maybe this will be the beginning of something big!

And while we're at it--won't somebody do a legitimate "Best of Colgems" compilation? With the 40th anniversary of the label just a few weeks away, wouldn't this be a great time for it?

Speechless

Lately, I've not been receiving any comments here at all.

I know this blog has limited appeal, but I was receiving input before, but not for the past few weeks.

How 'bout letting me know that somebody is out there? I read the traffic reports--people are visiting, but nothing I have posted has generated anything but a Marcel Marceau response.

I have lots more to put up, but let me know what you want to see and hear. I will do my best to accommodate your request.

Thanks.

The Monkees "Changes" LP

Undoubtedly the worst LP by the Pre-Fab four (less Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork for this outing), the "Changes" LP basically closed out The Monkees run--at least of new material--on Colgems.

The album is basically an Andy Kim album with vocals by Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz, as the lion's share of the material is either produced and/or written by the songwriting team of Kim and Jeff Barry.

Nothing on this album compares with the duo's "Sugar Sugar," but there is one true gem: "Oh My My," a pop/soul blend sung by Dolenz.

The album predicatably failed to chart in its original run, but did chart as a reissue during the second wave of Monkeemania in the mid 1980s.

"The Venerable Sir James Bond"

The stars of the Casino Royale soundtrack are Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass and Dusty Springfield, as their tunes are the most popular on the LP. However, don't underestimate the contribution made by Burt Bacharach, whose music fills the majority of the disk.

Here is one of his tunes, not necessarily about Woody Allen, but it could be about him, as he was one of the many "James Bonds" to populate the movie.
